The halal market is now projected to be worth over 58.3 billion by 2022, with 43 percent share of the market coming from the Islamic finance sector and the halal food industry taking up the other 36 percent of the market share.
“Halal” comes from the Arabic term for “permissible” and refers to a set of guidelines in Islam over activities and consumption of what is permissible by the religion. For food, only certain meats are allowed and even then, they are required to be slaughtered in a way that adheres to certain strict guidelines, or else it is deemed “haram” or unlawful.
